The disturbed outer Milky Way disc

In our paper, "The Disturbed Outer Milky Way Disc", myself and my collaborators looked at the strange bumps, clumps and wriggles in the velocity distribution the Milky Way disc, and compared them to some simulations of a recent disc crossing by a perturbing satellite.

This movie gives a brief explanation of the main results.

 

In connection with this paper we show here some movies of the velocity distribution of the simulated Galaxy in radial bins. It is akin to Figure 8 in the paper, but for different sections around the Galaxy of width 40 degrees. As noted in the paper, phi=0 is the same azimuth that the perturber impacted the galaxy.
