Extragalactic Astronomy (7,5 hp)

The course is given at 1/2 speed in Autum 2017.

General course information: The course is on the advanced level in the Bologna system and it is a compulsory course in our master programme in astrophyscis. The course is given every second year. The course is also suitable for graduate students in physics, astronomy and theoretical physics.

  • Schedule, lecturers, and literature for their lectures:
    The schedule of lectures, meetings, and examination is available in Live@Lund.

    28 August 2017, 13.15 Course start. Lecture room Cassiopeia in the Astronomy building. The meeting is compulsory. If you can not attend please contact the course responsible before the course start.

  • Literature: The textbook is:
    Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology by Peter Schneider (2nd Edition), Springer Verlag, ISBN 978-3-642-54083-7
    You will need this book for the exam and also for your studies.

    In addition each topic will have few supporting journal articles. Please note that these will be part of the examination and you should study them carefully.

  • Examination: Examination will consist of a three day take home exam (see the schedule for dates). The exam is divided into two parts. Active participation in lectures and discussion groups will be essential for a successful completion of the exam.

  • Live@Lund: This course will make use of Live@Lund. All registered students will automatically be signed up to this course on Live@Lund. The take-home exam will be handed-out and handed-in through Live@Lund.
