Radiation processes and Stellar Atmospheres (ASTA34)

Course content

The course deals with fundamental areas in radiation and plasma physics necessary for the understanding of the radiation emanating from the outer parts (atmospheres) of stars. Astronomical observations cover the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to microwaves. In the course you will study basic properties of stars and their atmospheres: effects of temperature, pressure chemical composition and stellar rotation. The solar atmosphere. Stellar spectra and formation of spectral lines. Convection and granulation. Thermodynamic equilibrium and departures from equilibrium. Oscillations and astroseismology. Magnetism and magnetic activity cycles. Mass loss: stellar coronas and stellar winds.
