LABORATORY
EXERCISE
SIGNATURES
OF EXOPLANETS
In this lab, various
observational signatures of exoplanets will be studied,
using the software package
BinaryMaker 3.0
for simulating star-planet systems. Exoplanets (extrasolar
planets) affect their host star in two principal ways:
(a) Since the star and its
planet orbit their mutual center of mass, also the star's
position moves slightly during a planetary orbit, causing
a slight Doppler shift of the stellar spectrum.
(b) If we are lucky enough to
view the planet's orbit edge-on, the planet will sometimes
be seen to transit across the face of the star, slightly
affecting its observed brightness.
Advisors for this exercise
are
Thomas Lennartsson and
Anna
Árnadóttir. Students will receive information
material, including a pre-lab handout, notes on the program
to be used, and a manual for carrying out the exercise.
